How To Fix a Running Toilet
The first step is to decide where the problem is. Lift up the cover on your toilet’s tank so you can see inside:
- Check the chain: Make sure the chain attached to the flush mechanism isn’t tangled up.
- Check the rubber seal: If you notice water coming down into the bowl even though the flapper is down, the rubber may be worn. In that case, replace the flapper.
- Lower the float below the overflow tube: The float may be allowing the water to get too high. Loosen the adjustment screw and lower the float until the water stops.
