How To DIY a Toilet That Doesn’t Stop Running

If your toilet won’t stop running, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and take care of things. This easy home maintenance project only takes 10 to 15 minutes, and it’s really cheap! Afterward, treat yourself to some gourmet ice cream with the money you’ll save from not calling a plumber.

How To Fix a Running Toilet

The first step is to decide where the problem is. Lift up the cover on your toilet’s tank so you can see inside:

  1. Check the chain: Make sure the chain attached to the flush mechanism isn’t tangled up.
  2. Check the rubber seal: If you notice water coming down into the bowl even though the flapper is down, the rubber may be worn. In that case, replace the flapper.
  3. Lower the float below the overflow tube: The float may be allowing the water to get too high. Loosen the adjustment screw and lower the float until the water stops.

If you need to replace any of these parts, you can find them in an inexpensive toilet flapper replacement kit.
