How to Repair a Doorbell

By March 14, 2019No Comments

Doorbells are a classic way for guests to let you know they’re at the door, and malfunctioning ones can be an inconvenience. Fortunately, you can identify and fix the problem on your own. Here’s what to look out for:

  • The problem may be with the wiring that connects the parts together and allows them to function.
  • Remove the doorbell button and disconnect it from the wires. If the doorbell rings when you touch the two wires together, then the button needs replacement.
  • Remove the chime cover, then use a low voltage tester. Touch one probe to the common terminal and the other to the door terminal, then have someone test the doorbell. If the tester lights up, you need to clean or replace the chime. If not, it’s another problem.
  • Use a low voltage test light to the transformer terminals. No light means you need a replacement terminal. Also, check that all chime lights connect to the transformer properly.
