Where Does Radon Come From?

By December 20, 2019No Comments

Radon is a radioactive gas created when naturally radioactive components of rocks, soil, and groundwater begin to decompose. The radon is released into the air and disperses. When it is released into a home, however, it can accumulate to toxic levels.

Sources of Radon

Many natural materials emit a small amount of radon. This is not generally dangerous to humans when it is released into the air, though high levels increase the risk for lung cancer.

When high radon levels are found in the home, soil surrounding the property is usually the culprit. The radon released from the soil can travel indoors through the sump pump, cracks in the foundation or other points of entry.

If you’re concerned about your home radon level, have it tested by a professional. Mitigation can include adding an extra layer of foundation to block the gas from entering.
